Ottawa Celebrates Filipino Heritage Month with High Fashion

Every year, Filipinos worldwide celebrate the Philippines’ independence as a sovereign country. On June 12, 2019, Filipinos will celebrate the 121st year anniversary as a nation. Meanwhile, in Canada, this coming month of June takes a more official recognition. Thanks to members of Canada’s House of Commons’ recent unanimous passing of private member Bill 155 put forward by MP Sala Zahid of Scarborough Centre in Toronto  that recognizes the outstanding contributions of Filipino-Canadians to Canada’s nation-building.  With her motion passed unanimously on November 2018, the month of June is now observed country-wide as Filipino Heritage Month.

In Ottawa, on June 1st, 2019, the community’s Filipino-Canadians will open the month-long festivities under the auspices of Ottawa’s PICOV with a fashion show that features the creations of a young Filipino high fashion designer, Ruel Rivera, which highlights the rich cultural heritage of the Philippines through fashion.  This high-fashion event, “An Evening of Glam and Fashion”, a first for Ottawa’s Filipino-Canadian community is organized by Tinig Pinoy Radio. Ottawa’s Marconi Centre at 1026 Baseline Road serves as venue for the event which starts at 7 in the evening. In addition to the fashion show, cocktails and dancing will be served to attendees.

Tinig Pinoy, enjoins everyone to take part in celebrating the colorful Filipino culture embodied during the very first Filipino Heritage Month to be observed every year Canada-wide. It encourages Filipino-Canadians to take pride of their very own fashionistas whose designs reflect the beauty and richness of the Filipino heritage.

By being at this special event, we are also supporting and celebrating Tinig Pinoy’s 27 years of community service through the broadcasting both via terrestrial and web radio.  Regina Sosing, Tinig Pinoy’s Programs Director  asks everyone to “become part of this wonderful event and show to the world our talent, our cultural heritage and our pride”.

Below is a calendar of the various activities organized by and under the auspices of Philippine Independence Committee of Ottawa Valley (PICOV), in celebration of this year’s Filipino Heritage Month.
